Ho's Trading Inc. Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Sulfites in Glace Coconut

Brooklyn, NY - March 24, 2003 -- Ho's Trading Inc. located at 1010 Dean Street, Brooklyn, NY 11238 is recalling 12 ounce plastic bags of Master Chao brand Glace Coconut because the product contains undeclared sulfites. People who have severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this product.

The Master Chao brand Glace Coconut, a product of China, was distributed to retail stores in an uncoded, 12 ounce plastic bag in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Virginia, Florida, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and North Carolina. The UPC number is 6 64460 10734 3.

The recall was initiated after it was discovered through routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets food inspectors that the product containing sulfites was distributed in packaging that did not declare the presence of sulfites. The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reactions in some asthmatics. Anaphylactic shock could occur in certain sulfite sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of sulfites. Analysis of the Master Chao brand Glace Coconut revealed that it contained greater than 10mg of sulfites per serving.

Establishments and consumers who have purchased the 12 ounce plastic bag of Master Chao brand Glace Coconut can return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 718-622-2288.
