FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- El Paso, TX -- June 24, 2004 -- Isabella Foods, Inc., of El Paso, Texas is recalling 13 ounce containers of Tekita Brand Pico de Gallo, lot number 1550401, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
The Pico de Gallo was distributed in 13 oz tubs through large retail grocery facilities in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. Tekita Brand Pico de Gallo is packaged in clear, plastic, 13 oz tubs with a yellow round label affixed to the lid. The product has a small white sticker affixed to the tub which indicates lot number 1550401.
No reports of illness or injury have been reported as a result of consuming this product. The recall is being initiated as a result of product testing conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration which revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in the product. Isabella Foods has ceased the distribution of the product as FDA and the company continue their investigation as to what caused the problem.
Consumers who have purchased Tekita Brand Pico de Gallo, lot number 1550401, are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 915-590-1899.
