Kushishang Brand Dried Potato and Hong Fu Brand Dried Potato Slice Recalled Due to Undeclared Sulfites

Brooklyn, NY - February 26, 2003 -- STAR MARK MANAGEMENT, INC., located at 1101 Metropolitan Ave., Brooklyn. NY 11211, is recalling 250gm packages of Kushishang Brand Dried Potato and Hong Fu Brand Dried Potato Slice because these products contain undeclared sulfites. People who have severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with these products.

The Kushishang Brand Dried Potato, product of China, is distributed in uncoded, heat sealed 250gm plastic bags. UPC #6920149000348. The Hong Fu Brand Dried Potato Slice, product of China, is also distributed in heat sealed plastic bags with coding #2002.12.10.2. Products were distributed to retail stores in the New York metropolitan area.

The recalls were initiated after it was discovered through routine sampling by NYS Dept. of Agriculture & Markets Food Inspectors that the above products containing sulfites, were distributed in packaging that did not declare the presence of sulfites, The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reactions in some asthmatics. Anaphylactic shock could occur in certain sulfite sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of sulfites. Analysis of the Kushishang Brand Dried Potato and Hong Fu Brand Dried Potato Slice revealed that products contained over 10 milligrams per serving.
