Lisy Corporation Announces Recall of "Lisy Mini-Jelly Candies" Due to Serious Choking Hazard

Miami, FL - January 17, 2002 -- Lisy Corporation of Miami is announcing their recall of Lisy brand Mini-Jelly Candies, All Flavors, because these products present a choking hazard. These candies are distributed in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, West Virginia, Virginia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Missouri, Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Kentucky and Arizona under the labeled brand "LISY" and are packaged in clear acrylic plastic bags, containing 6 sealed cups per bag. Each cup, which is the size of a single coffee creamer, contains a gelatin product with a small chunk of fruit. These cups contain "konjac" also known as "conjac, konnyaku, yam flour, or glucomannan" which does not dissolve as easily as common gelatin does. The Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Food and Drug Administration consider this type of candy to pose a serious choking risk particularly to infants, children and the elderly. Local authorities have reported six children deaths from choking in the United States associated with this type of Jelly candy. There have also been reports of deaths in other countries.

The Food and Drug Administration contacted Lisy Corporation when they learned that they repacked and distributed these products. Lisy Corporation is cooperating with the FDA and is voluntarily recalling from distributors and retailers to consumers. Consumers are urged to return this product to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 305-836-6001.
