Liuzzi Cheese Company Recalls Fresh Basket Cheese, Fresh Ricotta, and Fresh Mozzarella Because of Possible Health Risk

LIUZZI CHEESE COMPANY of North Haven, Connecticut is voluntarily recalling all its FRESH BASKET CHEESE, FRESH RICOTTA & FRESH MOZZARELLA, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

LIUZZI'S FRESH BASKET CHEESE, FRESH RICOTTA & FRESH MOZZARELLA were distributed in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Massachusetts, through retail stores, distributors, and restaurants.

The product can be identified by the Liuzzi label. Fresh ricotta cheese with the Liuzzi label is packaged in 1 lb. and 3 lb. white plastic containers, and 1 lb. and 3 lb. tin containers. Fresh mozzarella cheese with the Liuzzi label is packaged in 3 lb. white plastic containers and 1 lb individual pieces with label. Fresh basket cheese with the Liuzzi label is packaged in a white basket and poly plastic bag.

On 5/3/2001, the CT Department of Public Health (DPH) issued a press release reporting 15 cases of Salmonella Newport infections. Of the 15 ill persons, DPH stated that at least 14 ate Liuzzi's fresh cheese within a week of their illness. Seven of the ill persons were hospitalized; none have died.

The FDA and Department of Agriculture are testing Liuzzi's product, plant and personnel to determine if there is a source of contamination. In the meantime, Liuzzi Cheese has voluntarily ceased production and distribution of the product.

Consumers who possess any of the recalled product should return it to the place of purchase for a refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at (203) 248-4356 or The CT Department of Public Health at (860) 509-7994.
