Consumer Alert: Undeclared Sulfites in Malatya Dried Apricot

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE --Albany, NY-- November 20, 2003 -- New York State Agriculture Commissioner Nathan L. Rudgers today warned sulfite-allergic consumers and asthmatics to avoid consuming "Malatya Dried Apricot" due to the presence of undeclared sulfites in the product.

"Malatya Dried Apricot" is being recalled by Mina Quality Foods Inc., 71 Bloomingdale Road, Hicksville, NY 11801. The product is packaged in a 340 gram, plastic wrapped styrofoam tray, labeled with code 09-2004. It was sold in the New York City metropolitan area.

Routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets food inspectors revealed that the product contained high levels of sulfites, which were not declared on the label.

Sulfites can cause deadly reactions in asthmatics and others suffering sulfite allergies. No illnesses have been reported to date.

Consumers who have purchased "Malatya Dried Apricot" should return them to the place of purchase.
