Melissa's World Variety Produce Recalls Crystallized Ginger Due to Undeclared Sulfites

Vemon, CA - December 6, 2001 -- Melissa's World Variety Produce is recalling its 3 ounce packages of Melissa's Crystallized Ginger because it contains undeclared sulfites. People who have allergies or a severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

The recalled Melissa's Crystallized Ginger was distributed in East Coast retail stores in the states of New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania and through mail orders nationwide. The product was distributed to the stores from November 15 to December 3, 2001, and is marked with lot #156-69-606. No expiration date is on the containers.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.

The recall was initiated after sampling by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets discovered that the sulfite-containing product was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of sulfites.

Consumers who have purchased packages of Melissa's Crystallized Ginger are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact Melissa's Customer Service or Food Safety Division at:
