Pet Valu Recalls Certain Dog Chew Products Due to Possible Health Risk.

Based on information received from the FDA, Pet Valu International Inc. of Wayne, Pennsylvania announced today that it is recalling certain dog chew products manufactured by Farm Meats Canada Ltd. This recall only affects the following specialty dog chew items:

ROLLOVER Brand Garlic Flavoured Pig Ears (4 pack) UPC 6076688023
ROLLOVER Brand Cheese Flavoured Pig Ears (4 pack) UPC 6076688022
ROLLOVER Brand 5" Chews (4 pack) UPC 6076688005
ROLLOVER Brand Lambie Chunks (1.7oz) UPC 6076688102
ROLLOVER Brand Dog Chew Hooves Smoked or Plain (sold in bulk)

This recall does not affect most of the dog chew items sold by the Company, (including bulk, unflavored pigs' ears) which are supplied by a different manufacturer.

It has been determined that the products in question may be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in small children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may only suffer short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Long-term complications can include severe arthritis.

The Company has already removed these items from its stores and warehouses. However, consumers who have purchased any of these products are asked to bring any remaining quantities to their nearest Pet Valu store in New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland or Virginia for a free replacement or an exchange of equivalent value.

In the meantime, pet owners should exercise care when handling these particular dog chew products. The FDA suggests that anyone who comes in contact with these items should wash their hands with hot water and soap. As a precautionary measure, elderly people, young children, and people with weakened immune systems should avoid having any contact with these items.

Consumers with questions may contact should contact David Wheat at 610-225-0800, ext. 4007.
