Sara Lee Bakery Group Recalls Earth Grains Onion Buns Due to Undeclared Egg

St. Louis, MO - June 17, 2002 -- Sara Lee Bakery Group is voluntarily recalling 8-count, 19-ounce packages of Earth Grains Onion Buns marked for purchase between June 15 and 28, 2002, because they contain egg as an ingredient that is not listed on the package.

Consumption of this product by people who have an allergy or sensitivity to eggs may result in a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction. This product only poses a potential hazard to egg-sensitive individuals. The buns are safe for all other people to consume. The company has not received any consumer complaints regarding these buns.

Sara Lee Bakery Group is working together with the FDA in undertaking a voluntary recall of this product and also has notified the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network. The package mislabeling was discovered during a routine FDA bakery inspection. Production was immediately suspended. The mislabeled packages have been removed from store shelves but may still be in consumer possession.

The buns were distributed in all or parts of the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

The affected packages may be identified by looking for the recommended purchase date, which is either contained on a sticker, printed directly on the bag, or contained on the plastic bag-closure clip. The packages will state one of the following: BEST IF PURCHASED BY (following a date), GOOD THRU (followed by a date); or PURCHASE BY (followed by a date). All packages marked with the purchase date of June 15 through June 28 are affected by the recall.

The recall does not apply to any other Earth Grains product or Earth Grains Onion Buns marked for purchase after June 28.
