SEPP’S GOURMET FOODS ISSUES ALLERGY ALERT ON UNDECLARED LIQUID EGG WHITES IN “SEPP’S BAKERY CLASSIC GINGERBREAD BARNYARD COOKIES”

Burnaby, BC Canada (October 31, 2000) -- Sepp’s Gourmet Foods Ltd. of Burnaby, BC Canada, is voluntarily recalling all 2.3 ounce (65 gram) packages of its Sepp’s Bakery Classic “Pig”, “Tractor”, and “Cow” gingerbread cookies because they may contain undeclared liquid egg whites. People who have allergies to eggs run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

The recalled “Pig, Tractor and Cow” cookies were distributed through Stop and Shop Supermarkets in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island.

The product comes in a 2.3 ounce, clear plastic package, identified with the descriptor “Pig”, “Cow” and “Tractor” on the back label.

The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the egg-containing product was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of eggs. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by an error in converting the Canadian ingredient declaration for export. We have received one consumer complaint of a child’s allergic reaction.

Production of the product has been suspended until the FDA and the Company is certain the labeling has been corrected.

Consumers who have purchased the 2.3 ounce packages of “Pig, Tractor, and Cow” barnyard cookies, and are allergic to eggs, are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1 800 360 8824.
