Consumer Alert: Undeclared Sulfites in Dried Sweet Potato

New York - January 18, 2002 -- New York State Agriculture Commissioner Nathan L. Rudgers today warned sulfite-allergic consumers and asthmatics to avoid consuming Dried Sweet Potato due to the presence of undeclared sulfites in the product.

The product is being recalled by Sin Muk-Sang, 6310 20th Avenue, Brooklyn, New York 11204. Dried Sweet Potato is packaged in plastic bags with orange, yellow and white coloring with the code Q/LNS01-1997. All other labeling is in Chinese. The package is approximately 8 ounces in size. It was sold in the Brooklyn area only.

Routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets food inspectors revealed the product contained high levels of sulfites, which were not declared on the label.

Sulfites can cause deadly reactions in asthmatics and others suffering sulfite allergies.

This product should be returned to Sin Muk-Sang, 6310 20th Avenue, Brooklyn.
