State Agriculture Commissioner Issues Smoked Fish Warning

Certain Packages of Craigellachie Smoked Scottish Salmon Tests Positive for Listeria Contamination

New York - April 5, 2000 - State Agriculture Commissioner Nathan L. Rudgers today warned consumers not to eat certain packages of Craigellachie Smoked Scottish Salmon due to possible Listeria contamination.

Craigellachie Smoked Scottish Salmon in 4 oz. plastic vacuum packages with a code of "14 144," "23 144," "31 144," "32 144" or "49 144" on a label attached to the package should not be eaten. Recent samples of this product, collected at a Yonkers, New York grocery store, tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. Anyone who may have this product in their residences should return it to point of purchase for a refund or discard it.

The product is being marketed in the Metropolitan New York area by Beyer Lighting Fish Company, Fulton Fish Market, New York, New York 10012. An ongoing investigation to determine the manufacturer of this product is being conducted by New York Agriculture and Markets personnel.

The samples were taken by inspectors for the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, which regularly inspects retail food establishments to ensure proper sanitation.

If consumed, the product could cause Listeriosis, a disease which usually causes mild flu-like symptoms in healthy individuals; however, in immuno-compromised individuals, meningitis and blood poisoning can occur. Pregnant women are also a high-risk group. Listeriosis can also result in still births.

"When promptly diagnosed by a physician, the disease can usually be successfully treated with antibiotics," Commissioner Rudgers said.
