Wheel and Wedge-Shaped Sonoma Cheddar and Jack Cheese Recalled; Listeria Contamination Possible
SONOMA, CA - May 29, 2001 -- Sonoma Foods Inc. is initiating a voluntary recall of all lots of wheels and wedges of Sonoma Cheddar and Sonoma Jack cheeses of all flavors due to possible health risk.
This voluntary recall does not include Sonoma Jack and Sonoma Cheddar cheeses in any other consumer shapes or forms (slices, block-cut, shreds and portions) and any other food service sizes.
No illnesses have been reported to date.
The recall is a result of a product testing which revealed the finished product might contain the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes. This organism can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
Consumers who have purchased Sonoma Cheddar and Sonoma Jack wheels and wedges are urged to return the product to the place of purchase or call the above number for a full refund.
Retailers who have received Sonoma Cheddar and Sonoma Jack wheels and wedges are asked to remove them from sale and contact the phone number above.
The products have been distributed primarily in California with limited distribution nationally.
Sonoma Foods, Inc. has temporarily ceased production in the plant in Sonoma and moved the production and packaging operations to allied facilities.
