Spice World Recalls 1 oz. Basil Leaves Because of Possible Health Risk

Orlando, FL - July 17, 2002 -- Spice World, Inc. of Orlando, FL is voluntarily recalling 1 oz. plastic bottles of Spice World brand BASIL LEAVES, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illness such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), and endocarditis and arthritis.

Fifty-two (52) cases (1,248 bottles) or BASIL LEAVES were distributed through supermarkets in South Florida. The product is packed in 1 oz. plastic bottles with a green and white label stating Spice World brand BASIL LEAVES with the code"0912" stamped in ink on the label.

When BASIL LEAVES are used in preparing foods cooked at 165 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, the risk of food borne illness due to Salmonella is significantly reduced. Nevertheless, the company understands that some customers may not cook this product at such temperatures and wishes to notify the public accordingly.

No illnesses have been reported to date. The company has ceased distribution of the product with the code date in question.

Consumers who have purchased Spice World 1 oz. BASIL LEAVES, coded 0912, are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-433-4979.
