Consumer Alert: Undeclared Sulfites in Winter Melon Candy
Brooklyn, NY - December 3, 2002 -- New York State Agriculture Commissioner
Nathan L. Rudgers today warned sulfite-allergic consumers and asthmatics to
avoid consuming "Winter Melon Candy" due to the presence of undeclared
sulfites in the product.
The product is being recalled by Sunny Lake Trading, Inc., 651A Lexington
Avenue, Brooklyn, New York 11211. "Winter Melon Candy" is packaged
in a 12 oz., plastic bag with the code in Chinese. Ingredients are listed as
plum, salt and sugar. It is a product of Taiwan.
"Winter Melon Candy" was distributed in the Metropolitan New York
area.
Routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets food
inspectors revealed the product contained high levels of sulfites, which were
not declared on the labels. Sulfites can cause deadly reactions in asthmatics
and others suffering sulfite allergies.
No illnesses have been reported to date.
Consumers who have purchased "Winter Melon Candy" should return
it to the place of purchase.
