Tai Foong USA Issues Allergy Alert On Undeclared Sulfites In Shrimp

Seattle, WA - December 18, 2001 -- Tai Foong USA of Seattle, WA is recalling its Northern King 2 lb packages of frozen 26/30 Simple Peel Raw Shrimp because they may contain undeclared sulfites. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.

This shrimp was sold between September 1, 2001 and November 3, 2001 only at Wegmans stores in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

The shrimp comes in a 2 pound, blue and red package with the Northern King brand displayed on the front. The back of the package contains a sticker that states "Simple Peel IQF 10/2 lbs 26/30" along with the UPC code. The bags do not contain a lot code.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.

The recall came about when it was discovered an overseas packer of the shrimp inadvertently shipped a product containing sulfites. This was an isolated incident.

Consumers who have purchased this product at a Wegmans' supermarket between September 1, 2001 and November 3, 2001 and who may be allergic to sulfites are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact Tai Foong USA at (800) 388-3666.
