Don Berto's Baking Co. Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Milk Product in Tomato Pies

Philadelphia, PA - July 11 2002 -- Don Berto's Baking Co. of Philadelphia, PA, is recalling 1400 tomato pies because they may contain undeclared traces of milk that was a sub ingredient of romano cheese. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of serious or life threatening allergic reaction if they consume the product.

Tomato pies were distributed to PA, NJ, DE, MD and reached consumers thru D.I. Mathews who distributed the product to retail stores.

Tomato pies were packaged on 9x12 inch styrofoam plate then shrink wrapped. Product is labeled as Don Berto's Tomato Pie.

As of July 11, 2002, one allergic reaction has been reported.

The recall was initiated when a child in New Jersey had an allergic reaction after consuming this product. Romano cheese was added to the sauce which contains milk, a known allergen, and was not declared on the product label.

Consumers who have purchased this product and are allergic to milk or milk product should not consume this product and return it to the place of purchase. Consumers with questions should call 215-533-7044.
