Tree of Life, Inc. Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Peanuts in "Tree of Life Organic Trail Mix"
St. Augustine, FL - May 3, 2000 - Tree of Life, Inc. is voluntarily recalling its 6-ounce packages and 25-lb. bulk boxes of "Tree of Life Organic Trail Mix" because they may contain undeclared peanuts. People who have allergies to peanuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.
The recalled "Tree of Life Organic Trail Mix" products were distributed to retail stores east of the Rockies and in Arizona.
The product comes in a 6 ounce clear printed plastic package marked with UPC Code # 030684335709 on the back and with an expiration date of the following printed on the back.

The 25-lb. bulk product comes in a corrugated box and the date of manufacture is marked on the tape of the box. The UPC Code for this item is 030684175091. Listed below are dates of manufacture.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.
The voluntary recall was initiated immediately after it was discovered that the peanut-containing product was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of peanuts. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary miscue in the company's labeling process.
Production of the product has been suspended until FDA and the company has ensured the correction of the packaging process.
Consumers who have purchased 6-ounce packages of "Tree of Life Organic Trail Mix" are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-260-2424.
