Unilever Announces Egg Allergy Alert: Product May Contain Eggs, a Known Allergen, Which is Not Declared on the Label

Unilever Voluntary Initiates the Recall of Lipton Asian Sides -- "Teriyaki Noodles" Variety with UPC 41000-02802 and "Best Used By" Codes of Aug. 31 05B, Sep 01 05B, Sep 02 05B, Sep 04 05B, Sep 05 05B, Sep 09 05B, Sep 11 05B, Sep 12 05B, Sep 13 05B, Sep 14 05B, Sep 15 05B, and Sep 16 05B

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Englewood Cliffs, NJ -- July 30, 2004 -- Unilever is voluntarily recalling certain codes of its Lipton Asian Sides -- "Teriyaki Noodles" variety. This product may contain eggs, a known allergen, which is not declared on the label. During a transition to using a non-egg noodle in the product, noodles with egg were inadvertently used but egg was not declared on the ingredient statement of the new label. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to eggs run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product. No illnesses have been reported to date.

The affected Lipton Asian Sides -- "Teriyaki Noodles" product was distributed in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. The situation has been fully investigated and corrected.

Product being recalled has the UPC 4100-02802 and "Best If Used By" codes of Aug. 31 05B, Sep 01 05B, Sep 02 05B, Sep 04 05B, Sep 05 05B, Sep 09 05B, Sep 11 05B, Sep 12 05B, Sep 13 05B, Sep 14 05B, Sep 15 05B, and Sep 16 05B. The laser imprinted "Best If Used By" code is located on the back of the pouch vertically on the side seam of the package.

509 cases (6,018 pouches) of Lipton Asian Sides -- "Teriyaki Noodles" product are involved. No other Lipton Asian Sides products are included in this recall.

"Our primary concern is always for the health and safety of our consumers," stated Steve Innes, Vice President of Supply Chain Capabilities. "We believe the voluntary recall of this product is in their best interest."

Unilever is working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in implementing this voluntary recall and has notified all affected distributors and retail customers, as well as the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network which will be notifying its members.

Consumers who have purchased the product carrying the codes listed above should discard it and then call Unilever's toll-free Hot Line at 1-800-457-7086 for a full refund, or return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.
