Wise Foods Inc. Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Dairy Product in Hannaford and Stop & Shop Brand White Tortilla Chips
Kennesaw, GA - August 6, 2002 -- Wise Foods, Inc., a leading maker of salty snacks, announced today that it has recalled its 20 ounce packages of Hannaford and Stop & Shop brand white tortilla chips because they may contain nacho cheese chips seasoned with dairy-based ingredients.
The recalled white tortilla chips, which have been removed from store shelves, were distributed through Hannaford retail stores in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont. The recalled chips were distributed through Stop & Shop retail stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, and Rhode Island.
The Hannaford chips come in a plastic package marked with UPC code "041268 12334" and Product Code "SEP02X2B." The Stop & Shop chips come in a plastic package marked with UPC code "2112018199" and Product Code "SEP02X2B." The product code will be found on the front of the bag in the upper right hand corner of the package.
No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this product.
The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the dairy-containing product was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of dairy product. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the Company's packaging process. The Company has completed a thorough review of all of its facilities and has taken action to ensure that any potential problems have been corrected.
Consumers who have purchased 20 ounce packages of Hannaford or Stop & Shop
brand white tortilla chips with the code numbers identified above may return
them to the place of purchase for a refund. Consumers with questions may contact
Wise Foods at 1-888-759-4401.
