  UPC -Many commercial product manufacturers use the Universal Product Code (UPC), a commercial bar code system, on product labels with no direct cost to retailers or consumers. Military departments and Defense Agencies may use the UPC symbol in processes that can accept it (Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense Memorandum, dated 7-6-95). To facilitate the Department of Defense use of the UPC symbol, The Defense Logistics Information Service (DLIS), in cooperation with The Naval Supply Systems Command, established this commercial item cross-reference to Government National Stock Numbers.

EAN - EAN International is the sister organization of the Uniform Code Council and governs the standards for Automatic Identification Technology in Europe and throughout the world, other than in North America.  EAN International works closely with UCC, and the two organizations expect to fully merge their standards by the year 2005. EAN International has set up a working group with UCC and NATO Allied Committee 135 to help build the linkage between EAN/UCC product identification numbers and NATO Stock Numbers.
