Remarks by Mrs. Bush Tribute to Gospel Music

The President: Good evening, and welcome to the White House. Tonight we celebrate America's musical heritage with our "Salute to Gospel Music."

Millions of Americans have turned their faith into song through Gospel music. From its roots in rural churches to its popularity on radio, this music has lifted our hearts and lightened our burdens for generations.

The Psalms tell us to "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord", and tonight's performers will share some of Gospel's most joyful sounds.

These songs provide comfort and hope when we need them most. They open our hearts to a deeper faith. And they bring us closer to God.

Mrs. Bush: Music has a way of seeing us through every chapter of our lives. In song we find deep spiritual fulfillment.

Gospel music, while uniquely American, is the reflection of what it means to be human - to feel pain and loss, healing and joy.

Songs of praise can be the most powerful praise of all.

Tonight's performers will bring joy to our hearts, from new generation artists like Jump-5 to the established, soulful sounds of the Blind Boys of Alabama.

We're thrilled to have CeCe Winans, Michael W. Smith, and many others with us tonight.
