  • Assures dairy farmers a reasonable minimum price for their milk throughout the year
  • Assures consumers of an adequate supply of milk to meet their needs throughout the year and help prevent wild fluctuations in price through periods of heavy and light milk production

  • Develops sanitary requirements and model regulations to enhance the availability of safe, wholesome, high-quality dairy products
  • Defines a product's quality and wholesomeness
  • Develops USDA dairy plant requirements
  • Develops model state requirements concerning the sanitary production and processing of manufacturing grade milk and milk products
  • Examines the language of newly developed or revised international standards to protect U.S. public health and ensure fair practice in food trade

Market News

  • Provides timely and accurate volume and pricing information needed for an orderly and efficient marketing system for milk and dairy products

Promotion and research programs

  • National Fluid Milk Processor Program - Provides a consumer hotline, 1-800-WHY-MILK, available 24 hours a day. This hotline offers information and consumer brochures about a range of topics: milk and fitness, recipe ideas, and nutrition. There is also a medical advisory board to provide medical and scientific advice.
  • National Dairy Producer Program - The National Dairy Council, Dairy Managment Inc., and many Qualified Programs are working together to increase school participation in the school breakfast program. This program provides a healthy breakfast (of which milk is an important component) to children before school starts.
