The National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health is accessible by public and private transportation. Please review Security Measures prior to your visit. Directions from Baltimore

Take I-695 to I-95 south to I-495. On I-495 proceed west towards Silver Spring. Take Exit 34, marked "Bethesda," and proceed to the 4th traffic light. Turn right onto South Drive where NIH police will inspect all vehicles. Exiting the security check area, turn right and head down the hill. At the stop sign at the bottom of the hill, turn left onto Center Drive. The Library, marked Building 38, is on your right.

Directions from Frederick

Take I-270 south toward Washington and I-495. Where I-270 and I-495 split, follow the signs to I-495. Take Exit 34, marked "Bethesda" and proceed to the 4th traffic light. Turn right onto South Drive where NIH police will inspect all vehicles. Exiting the security check area, turn right and head down the hill. At the stop sign at the bottom of the hill, turn left onto Center Drive. The Library, marked Building 38, is on your right.

Directions from Virginia

Directions from Washington, DC

Proceed north from the District on Wisconsin Avenue (Rt. 355) to the intersection of South Drive and Rockville Pike. Turn left onto South Drive where NIH police will inspect all vehicles. Exiting the security check area, turn right and head down the hill. At the stop sign at the bottom of the hill, turn left onto Center Drive. The Library, marked Building 38, is on your right.

By Metro

The National Library of Medicine may be reached via the Washington, D.C. Metro subway system. Visitors to the Library are encouraged to use Metrorail or Metrobus service on weekdays. The Library is located about 200 yards south of the Medical Center stop on the Metro red line. Upon exiting the escalator proceed left onto the path that parallels Rockville Pike. As you approach the intersection between Rockville Pike and Center Drive, you will see the Library, labeled Building 38, on the right across Center Drive.
