AD/GEO BULLETIN NO. 00-02

Administration and Management

Subject: Development of Program to Increase Diversity in the Geosciences

In response to recommendations by the Advisory Committee for Geosciences (AC/GEO) and a commitment by leaders of the Directorate for Geosciences (GEO), a new initiative, Network for Diversity and Education, is being developed for implementation in FY 2001. This initiative is targeted at broadening participation in the geosciences by traditionally underrepresented groups including women, minorities and persons with disabilities.

To lead the initial program development, Ms. Jewel Prendeville is being detailed to the Office of the Assistant Director for Geosciences as Staff Associate for Diversity Program Development for a period of seven months effective June 1, 2000. In addition, Dr. Donald Elthon will serve as a Consultant in the Office of the Assistant Director for Geosciences during the Summer. Ms. Prendeville and Dr. Elthon will work with the GEO Education Team, AC/GEO, NSF staff, Federal agencies, professional societies and the geosciences community in developing an implementation plan for the new initiative.

Information regarding this initiative will be posted on the GEO HomePage at www. geo.nsf.gov/geo/diversity and comments may be sent to geo_diversity@nsf.gov. Ms. Prendeville can be reached at (703) 306-1521 and is located in room 775.
