Impact
Nugget:
The Alliance for Graduate Education in
Mississippi (AGEM) is an equal partnership between the four doctoral degree-granting
institutions in Mississippi, with informal outreach to several HBCU and small
institutions in this state and region.
The primary goal of AGEM is to enhance the success of minority students,
primarily African-American students (36% of the college age population in this
state), in completing doctoral degrees in STEM areas. The AGEM program facilitates and coordinates activities between
the four institutions, including recruiting activities, social events and
retreats for students, summer undergraduate research experience programs, and
an annual state-wide conference. The
latter conference has grown over the past four years to a level of nearly 400
student and faculty participants. The
most obvious outcome of our AGEM program is measured in terms of degrees
granted. Prior to this program, the
four Mississippi institutions produced 13 minority PhDs in SMET fields in a
five year period. After four and a half
years of the AGEM program, we have produced 41 minority PhDs in these fields,
thus tripling degree production. The
AGEM program operates in close coordination with other minority pipeline
programs, including LS-AMP and HBCU projects, McNair programs, and NIH-funded
programs.
Statement:
The AGEM program has created a network
between institutions, to supplement strong student support systems within each
of the four partnering institutions.
AGEM has given focus to our efforts, which are especially meaningful
given the high percentage of African-Americans in our state’s workforce.
