Impact nugget:
Missouri Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate program
(MAGEP) has worked steadily to increase the number of underrepresented minority
students earning doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics (STEM) disciplines. A total
of 51 minority students were enrolled in STEM disciplines for Fall 2002, an
increase of 64.5% over the past five years.
MAGEP STEM minority doctoral degrees awarded equaled 12 students, an
increase of 200% over the last five years.
MAGEP fellows have also participated in both the Preparing Future Faculty
Program (PFF) and MU’s Graduate School’s “Critical Issues in Graduate
Education” (CIGE) series. PFF has
provided MU graduate students with direct exposure to the roles,
responsibilities and cultures of different kinds of institutions to help them
make informed decisions. Moreover, the
Critical Issues in Graduate Education series has brought several national
experts to MU to discuss pressing issues in graduate education. Furthermore, MAGEP works closely with the
Louis Stokes Missouri Alliance for Minority Participation (LS-MoAMP) and the
McNair Scholars program and created the Access to Doctoral Education (ADE)
undergraduate summer research program to help facilitate mentoring
relationships with undergraduate students in the STEM disciplines. Connecting with these successful programs
has shown remarkable commitment and student’s interest to pursued advanced
degrees. For example, of the 27 ADE
participants, 15 (56%) have received their bachelor’s degrees in STEM
fields. Twelve of the 15 (80%) ADE graduates
are currently enrolled in graduate programs and waiting to be notified of
acceptance into graduate school. The
remaining 12 ADE students have all indicated that they will pursue graduate
studies immediately after completion of their bachelor’s degree. Awildo Blanco and Harvey Cline, ADE 2000
participants are currently pursuing their Ph.D. in civil and mechanical
engineering respectively at MU.
Statement:
The alliance with the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico (PUPR) is a fine example of MAGEP mutually beneficial partnership where MU faculty trains PUPR faculty members toward the doctoral degree in civil, computer, electrical, and nuclear engineering. One significant outcome of this partnership is a decrease in the “time-to-degree.” The first graduate of the partnership, Alejandro Suarez, earned his Ph.D. in nuclear engineering in December 2001 after only two and a half years of study at MU. Moreover, a total of 6 PUPR faculty members have received or will complete their doctorates in engineering by December 2004.
