HUD
Joins Partnership to Increase Energy Efficiency, Affordability in
Public Housing
HUD,
EPA, and DOE signed a formal partnership in September 2002 to promote
ENERGY STAR throughout HUD's affordable housing programs. In response
to a directive by President Bush for the federal government to find
ways to promote energy efficiency and conservation, the three agencies
teamed up to improve the energy efficiency of new and existing homes
through the use of ENERGY STAR products. Choosing energy-efficient
products can save families about a third of their energy bill. In
fact, in 2003 alone, Americans saved a whopping $9 billion through
ENERGY STAR. Such savings help make housing more affordablea
fact particularly important to low-income residents.
