POSITION: Research Geneticist (Plants)

LOCATION: Pullman, WA

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: The position is located at the Western Regional Plant Introduction State, located on the campus of Washington State University, Pullman, WA.
Incumbent will develop and apply single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers and microsatellites (SSRs) from Pisum sativum and the model legume Medicago truncatula linked to economic traits for allele mining in cool season food legume collections. Cross-taxa diversity will be analyzed by systematically screening mapped M. tuncatula SSRs and genes sequenced from M. tuncatula and P. sativum for SNP development in pea, chickpea and lentil. Moderate through-put genotyping will be conducted using a gel-based laser sequencer for SSRs and capillary electrophoresis for SNPs and SSRs with automated allele calling. The allele frequencies for genes/markers for economic traits will be published, used to refine legume core collections, and genotypes archived entered into NPGS database (GRIN).

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Recent Ph.D. in Plant Genetics or related field is required. Experience with PCR-based DNA marker systems, genetic map development, primer design, and automated genotyping systems are desirable. Knowledge of plant genetics, plant breeding, biochemistry, plant molecular biology, and cloning techniques is required.
