ANNOUNCEMENT NO: RA-04-073L

POSITION: Plant Physiologist

LOCATION: Urbana, IL

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: A postdoctoral research associate is available in the ARS Photosynthesis Research Unit, located at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The primary area of research involves biochemical and molecular genetic studies concerning the regulation of sucrose synthase, an important enzyme of sucrose utilization in crop plants. The incumbent uses modern fluorescent, biochemical and molecular techniques to identify the domains on the sucrose synthase protein that are essential for binding to membranes and the actin cytoskeleton; to elucidate the mechanisms such as protein phosphorylation that may regulate the interactions; and to identify determinants of protein stability.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Ph.D. in botany or plant physiology or a closely related field and a working knowledge of biochemistry, plant physiology and molecular biology is required. Experience with manipulation of cDNAs, expression of recombinant proteins, and Arabidopsis transformation is essential. Experience with protein purification, enzyme assays and protein phosphorylation is highly desirable.
