Sullivan, M.D., has announced the award of $500,000 to establish a national resource center for programs which serve children who are at risk of abuse or neglect, chronically disabled or terminally ill. The National Resource Center for Crisis Nurseries and Respite Care will be developed by the North Carolina Department of Human Resources in Raleigh. The center will provide training and technical assistance; evaluate the effectiveness of current services; conduct research to identify effective models for service delivery; and act as a clearinghouse to coordinate, exchange and disseminate information. "Providers who devote themselves to working with terminally ill children and children who are at risk of abuse and neglect will receive quality assistance for their programs with the creation of the national resource center," said Jo Anne B. Barnhart, assistant secretary for children and families. "Opportunities will exist for information sharing and exchange, and providers will be able to contact a readily available single source to receive answers." "The center will develop knowledge about what constitutes effective crisis nursery and respite care services," said Wade F. Horn, Ph.D., commissioner of the Administration on Children, Youth and Families. "Both of these services address the needs of drug-exposed children at a time when substance abuse is affecting greater numbers of America's families. These resources will help identify, develop and share program practices that are most effective." ACYF, located in HHS' Administration for Children and Families, serves as a focal point within the federal government for children and families. ###
