Sullivan, M.D., today named the members of a recently established Clinical Laboratory Improvement Advisory Committee. The committee will be chaired by Morton Kanter Schwartz, Ph.D., chairman of the Department of Clinical Chemistry at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. The committee will provide scientific and technical guidance to Secretary Sullivan and to Assistant Secretary for Health James Mason, M.D., who heads the Public Health Service, concerning clinical laboratory standards. The Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA) expanded the federal role in assuring high quality laboratory performance. Secretary Sullivan said, "HHS must take advantage of this opportunity to improve laboratory performance and at the same time preserve access to laboratory testing for all patients." The committee will provide guidance and make recommendations regarding changes in the criteria for categorizing tests according to complexity, quality control and quality assurance standards, personnel standards and proficiency testing standards. Assistant Secretary Mason said, "It is important that we have standards of laboratory performance that are in tune with new and emerging technology. We will look to the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Advisory Committee for help in this aspect of implementing the law."
