The links are no longer being updated. 1992.08.04 : Outstanding Scholar Intern Program Contact: Bob Hardy (202) 690-6145 August 4, 1992 Minorities tied the majority in the national competition for places in the federal Health Care Financing Administration's Outstanding Scholar Intern Program, it was announced here today. Of the 12 finalists--in this the first such annual HCFA program--six came from the nation's two largest minority groups; three were Afro-American and three Hispanic. Eight of the 12 scholar interns are women. "We at HCFA are especially pleased with the outcome of this initial selection of intern scholars," William Toby Jr., acting administrator of HCFA, said. "For we believe that diversity is essential if we are to better serve the health care needs of our changing population." Through its Medicare and Medicaid programs, HCFA serves 66 million Americans, or more than one of every four people in the nation. This year, HCFA expenditures on their behalf are expected to reach $204 billion. "Our 12 scholars have met rigorous standards, not the least of which were attaining at least a 3.5 average for all their undergraduate course work, or graduating in the top 10 percent of their classes," Toby added. - More - - 2 - Starting salaries for their GS 7/9 entry-level positions range from $21,906 to $26,798. Scholars from educational institutions across the country, including schools with high-minority enrollments, competed for the coveted year-long internships, which carry with them the promise of career-ladder positions in HCFA's Baltimore, Md., and Washington, D.C., headquarters. Over the course of a year, the scholar-interns, from 10 schools in six states, will be trained in a series of jobs that will familiarize them with HCFA's Medicare and Medicaid programs, and will develop their administrative and managerial skills.
