Sullivan, M.D., today announced the establishment of the Advisory Committee to the Director of the Centers for Disease Control. Samuel O. Thier, president of Brandeis University and former president of the Institute of Medicine, will serve as chairman of the committee. The 15-member committee will advise CDC Director William L. Roper, M.D., M.P.H., on policy issues and strategies that will help CDC fulfill its mission to promote health and prevent disease, disability and injury. It will also recommend ways to incorporate prevention activities more fully into health care. Dr. Roper said, "I am delighted by the wealth and diversity of expertise the members will bring to the advisory committee. They will provide invaluable guidance as CDC addresses the complex issues facing the country's public health system and will help us work more effectively with our private sector constituents to make prevention a practical reality." In addition to health experts the board has representation from business, education, public policy, and voluntary and philanthropic organizations. The committee will meet approximately twice a year in Atlanta. CDC is one of the eight Public Health Service agencies within HHS. The members are: Samuel O.
