Shalala today announced that $65 million in relief contingency funds are being provided to nine states impacted by flooding this summer. The funds for health and social services assistance were appropriated earlier this year, contingent on review of the area's needs by federal and state agencies. President Clinton acted Oct. 12 to make the funding available. The funding will support health-related activities for longer term recovery in the impacted area, as well as social services aimed especially at children and the elderly. Supported activities include provision of primary health care services as well as assistance in addressing mental health problems, including stress-related domestic violence and substance abuse, which are expected to grow in severity during the winter months. In addition, the funds will support efforts to assure water quality, prevent mosquito-borne disease, carry out disease surveillance and provide for dissemination of health-related information. About $37 million of the total comes from U.S. Public Health service agencies. Almost $21 million will be provided by HHS' Administration for Children and Families through the Social Services and Community Services Block Grants. Another $7 million is provided by HHS' Administration on Aging.
