Sullivan, M.D., has announced the award of over $5 million in grants to support the integration of services and housing to reduce homelessness among families with children. The grants will establish 24 Homeless Family Support Services Demonstration projects. The projects will encourage communities to develop and implement comprehensive support services for low-income families who are homeless, families who were previously homeless or those at imminent risk of becoming homeless. Most homeless families are low-income, single parent families in crisis. "These projects are a sound investment to demonstrate ways that homeless families can move into permanent housing. Providing the support needed for families to work toward self- sufficient living and avoid repeated episodes of homelessness will provide a better future for children," Secretary Sullivan said. Located in 20 states, the demonstration projects will test approaches in a wide variety of settings including large urban areas such as Los Angeles, Denver and Miami (Florida); and smaller cities such as Missoula (Montana), Covington (Kentucky) and Davenport (Iowa). All sites will establish or strengthen outreach and family case management as well as linkages to housing, health, human service and education agencies. "We look to these projects to provide creative approaches including intensive case-managed services to help families increase their ability to work and live independently, and to prevent families from becoming homeless," said Jo Anne B. Barnhart, assistant secretary for children and families. This demonstration program was developed by the department's Administration for Children and Families, in consultation with the Department of Housing and Urban Development, in response to a recommendation of the Homeless Families With Children Working Group of the federal Interagency Council on the Homeless. ### Note: List of grant recipients is attached.
