Title image with text - search the database

The database search screens are best viewed at 1024 x 768 (OR HIGHER) resolution.

  • For Microsoft Windows (95/98/NT/2000), viewed in Internet Explorer V4 or above; or Netscape Navigator V4 or above. Using JavaWebStart to run standalone EDKB Database.

The ORACLE database houses experimental data for about 2000 natural and synthetic compounds. Currently, data are included for biological assays that measure estrogenic and androgenic activity. In the future, data may be added for other pathways affecting endocrine function. These include thyroid and aromatase activity. Experimental data measuring estrogenic endpoints includes in vitro assays for estrogen receptor competitive binding affinity, cell proliferation, and reporter-gene assays, and in vivo assays for uterotrophic activity (i.e., uterine weight gain and vaginal cornification). The database also contains a bibliography with some 1200 citations, many of which include abstracts. Where relevant, experimental and bibliographic data are relationally linked.

Knowledge Mining

The front end of the database is a JAVA program developed to provide a powerful, flexible and friendly human interface to perform knowledge mining. The search page uses Boolean logic applied to numerous potential "search" fields. Importantly, the software also provides three-dimensional chemical structure search capability.

The search output pages provide both a spreadsheet-like tabular format and a graphical format that are relationally cross-linked. One output report summarizes results across all compounds satisfying search criteria. The other report has detailed data for each compound satisfying search criteria. Both output reports provide the ability to further search within and filter data from a previously completed search.

Help is provided within the database in several ways. Help menus are provided for the query page as well as the two types of output report pages. Additionally, cursor-directed pop-up definitions are provided to define individual variables.
