Health Clubs

If you are one of the million and a half Americans who will join a health club this month, we have news for you.

I'm Shirley Rooker for the Federal Trade Commission.

January is the month we seem to take a look at our bodies and seek out health clubs to get in shape for the new year. But don't let enthusiasm for exercising get in the way of your practical senses.

Check out the club you are considering by visiting it during the hours when you will be using it. Is it crowded? Are there long lines of people waiting for equipment? Too many people may keep you from using the facility.

And what about the professional qualifications of the staff? Are they trained in CPR? And what about education? Does the fitness program supervisor have at least a bachelot's degree in exercise science or physical education?

Look for a facility that has a small down payment so that you pay monthly as services are used. Large sums up front can be a disaster if the club closes shortly after you join.

I'm Shirley Rooker, director of WTOP radio's Call For Action for the Federal Trade Commission.
