Federal Trade Commission Identity Theft Victim Assistance Workshop October 23 - 24, 2000

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), held a public workshop on October 23^rd and 24^th to identify relevant issues and examine potential solutions associated with assisting victims of identity theft.

The FTC’s workshop was the first in a series of three, following up on the work begun at the National Summit on Identity Theft hosted by the Treasury Department last March. For the purposes of these workshops, the broader topic of how to combat identity theft was broken out into three subject areas:

• victim assistance;
• prevention; and,
• law enforcement.

The FTC’s workshop focused on victim assistance; the Social Security Administration hosted a session on prevention on October 25. The Department of Justice and the United States Secret Service will co-host a session on law enforcement on December 6, 2000.

The FTC’s workshop was held at the Federal Trade Commission, 600 Pennsylvania Ave, N.W., Washington, DC 20580, in Room 432.

Private industry, consumer representatives, law enforcement, the academic community, the private bar, and the larger public participated in the workshop on victim assistance. A Federal Register Notice [PDF] solicited public comments and described topics for discussion.
