"Advertising is now so near perfection that it is not easy to propose any improvement."

A lot has happened since 1759 when Samuel Johnson uttered these words. We’ve seen federal and state truth-in-advertising laws, multimillion dollar global roll-outs, and the e-commerce explosion. If you’re an in-house counsel, law firm generalist, marketing executive, or business owner, even the most promising product launch can fizzle out if you aren’t up to speed on the latest developments in advertising.

On Tuesday, April 30th, the Federal Trade Commission and New York legal experts will gather for Green Lights & Red Flags: FTC-BBB Rules of the Road for Advertisers, a one-day “back to basics” workshop about complying with truth-in-advertising laws. Sponsored by the FTC and its Northeast Regional Office, the Better Business Bureau Serving Metropolitan New York, and the Consumer Affairs Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, Green Lights & Red Flags will feature an impressive roster of New York and Washington attorneys discussing:

  • The Ins and Outs of Ad Substantiation
  • The Bottom Line on Fine Print: Effective Disclosures in Advertising
  • Rebates, “Free” Offers, and Other Product Promotions
  • DOT.COMpliance: Special Considerations for E-tailers
  • BBBOnline’s Reliability and Privacy Seal Programs
  • Common Advertising Mistakes – and How Experienced Practitioners Prevent Them
  • The Role of Network Clearance
  • The National Advertising Division: Resolving Disputes Without Litigation

Special guest speaker will be FTC Commissioner Mozelle Thompson.

Green Lights & Red Flags will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Meeting Hall of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, 42 West 44th Street in New York City. The admission fee includes continental breakfast and a CD-ROM of all workshop materials. The admission fee is $20 for general admission, $15 for members of the Better Business Bureau of Metro NY and free for government employees. Seating is limited - please register early - see link below. We look forward to seeing you on April 30th.
