Rental Car Extra Charges

If you are renting a car, there's an important question you should ask at the check-out counter.

I'm Shirley Rooker for the Federal Trade Commission.

The question: when must I return the car to avoid extra charges? For example, in a short-term rental, you may be surprised to find you have to pay for two full days, even if you rent the vehicle one afternoon and return it the next morning.

If you rent for the week and go over a few hours or days, you may have to pay a higher daily rate than you would expect based on the weekly charges. However, some companies do give you an hour's grace period. And you may be able to pay for the extra time on an hourly rate rather than for the whole day, which may turn out to be a better deal. But it's very important to establish the ground rules before you drive away from the rental lot.

I'm Shirley Rooker, director of WTOP radio's Call For Action for the Federal Trade Commission.
