Reports and Testimonies

GAO maintains archives of its reports since 1975 on this web site. The collection is spotty between 1975 and 1980 but fairly complete from 1980 to present. Most GAO reports and testimonies issued after October 1, 2002, will include Highlights, a one-page document providing the key findings and recommendations of a GAO report or testimony. You can use the Highlights to decide whether you wish to see full report or testimony.

If you are looking for a report, look first in the Reports and Testimony Products section. There you can search by a number of specific criteria including report number. Full text searching is also available for both reports and legal products. If you are looking for a text (ascii) version of a report since 1996, please follow the link to our archives maintained at the Government Printing Office (GPO).

Help for Customers with Visual Impairments

GAO's reports and testimonies since 1996 are in two formats: text and PDF(Portable Document Format). The ASCII text, accessible with text only browsers (Lynx for example), are available at our archive at GPO Access. Reports from 1975 to 1996 are available in PDF format. Comptroller General Decisions, reports on major agency rules, and bid protests are available in HTML and PDF formats. The HTML versions are accessible with a text only browsers and a number of speech synthesizers.

Many of our more recent reports are also available in accessible text format. These files were formatted to be accessible to users with visual impairments. Every attempt has been made to maintain the structural and data integrity of the original printed product by including features such as alternative text descriptions for graphic images and reformatted tables. These may not exactly duplicate the printed version.

Guidance, Special Publications, and Policy documents as well as some legal publications are available only in PDF format.

Free readers for PDF files are available to all users.

Access.Adobe.Com allows blind and visually disabled users to access documents in PDF format by converting them to HTML or ASCII text. Free accessible Adobe readers are also available.

How This Site is Created

This site runs on a recent version of the Apache web server. All static pages were created using Emacs (to create HTML) and The Gimp (to create graphics). Scripts and other features are created using Perl, PHP, and Python.

Customer Satisfaction Survey

GAO strives to be a model organization-one that is client and customer driven. In that spirit, GAO participates in an online customer satisfaction survey using the American Customer Satisfaction Index. The survey randomly selects a small proportion of visitors to our site and asks them a series of questions about their online experience. The survey will appear in a separate browser window; you may complete it whenever you wish during your visit to the site. The results, which show how this site compares with some of the best commercial and government Web sites, help guide GAO efforts to improve our Web site.
