Evidence shows that people who are not physically active are definitely not helping their health, and may likely be hurting it. Being active can bring you many health benefits. Engaging in physical activity on a regular basis can lower the risk of developing coronary heart disease, stroke, non-insulin-dependent (type 2) diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, and colon cancer by 30–50% (USDHHS, 1996).

There are many ways to be active and healthy! Scientific studies show that just 30 minutes of physical activity a day can help keep you healthy. Outdoor recreation is good for your physical and mental health. No matter where you live recreation opportunities are nearby, offering a variety of fun activities. Exploring hiking trails, biking around a lake, or camping under the stars is a great way to be active and enjoy family time together. Recreating in the natural world is a rewarding experience if you plan and prepare before you go and respect the environment and rights of others. There are many federal, state and local recreation areas close to where you live and work. You’ll be surprised at the number great places you’ll find around your community.

Volunteering is another great way to increase your personal fitness while having fun and providing a service. You’ll gain a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction while helping to maintain trails, complete a restoration project, or clean-up a recreation site. Volunteering on outdoor projects can be an alternative to Pilates classes, weight lifting and treadmills.
