Pacific Wildland Fire Sciences Lab

On August 14, 2003, the Seattle Forestry Sciences Laboratory was reborn as the Pacific Wildland Fire Sciences Laboratory. This new name reflects more than 30 years of fire research conducted out of the forestry sciences laboratory in Seattle. As its fire research program and partnerships grew, Station Director Tom Quigley decided to rename the lab as the Pacific Wildland Fire Sciences Laboratory (PWFSL) .

The lab will continue to be the home of the Fire and Environmental Research Applications Team (FERA) , led by Dr. Sam Sandberg, the Rural Urban Wildland Interactions Team (RUWIT) led by Dr. Roger Clark, Silviculture and Forest Models Team led by Steve Reutebuch. In addition, the Atmosphere and Fire Interactions Research Team (AirFIRE) has been formed, led by Dr. Sue Ferguson, and will be based at PWFSL.

Research currently conducted at the newly named lab includes the impact of fire on air quality and visibility, wildfire and ecology research, the effects of fire on air, the impacts of smoke on human health, and social research (rural and urban wildland interface). The Station will also continue to conduct significant fire research at its other lab locations.
