Overview

We live in a global ecosystem. We need clean air, clean and sufficient water, and appropriate land use that provides living space, food production areas, and wilderness areas. We need to preserve diverse types of ecosystems. When managed wisely, they create environments with healthy living conditions for different types of plants, animals, insects, and microbes. CSREES programs advance public understanding of the ecological functions that are crucial in identifying solutions to environmental and health challenges and to protecting our quality of life.

In Focus

• The 2002 CSREES Stakeholders Workshop on Plants and Pest Biology showed support for ecosystems level research.
• The CSREES Science for Sustainability Working Group is an intra-agency group formed to support and promote environmental, economic, and social systems.
• As a member of the USDA Sustainable Development Council, CSREES supports sustainability in environmental, economic, and community development.

Partnerships

• CSREES works with the Ecological Visions Project of the Ecological Society of America (ESA) to identify solutions for environmental and health challenges.
• National program leaders in CSREES participate in Ecoagriculture Partners, who exchange information, solve problems, and raise awareness of ecoagriculture.

Selected Results and Impacts

• Using CSREES funds, the Land Stewardship Project, a nonprofit organization in Minnesota, conducts research in natural resources and environmental quality.
• With support from CSREES/NRI's Managed Ecosystems program, research at Washington State University is comparing multiple fruit production systems.
• Through CSREES funding, Ohio State University has developed a statewide integrated approach through the Agroecosystems Management Program.
