Each
year, thousands of Americans seek
information about employment opportunities with
the Federal government. In fiscal 2002 alone,
www.USAJOBS.opm.gov (the government’s central
on-line source of federal job postings) serviced
29 million requests for employment information.
But job applicants have long complained that the
process of applying for federal work is unnecessarily
tedious and complicated. For example, a job applicant
may often have to send a resume to multiple addresses
when applying for several jobs within the same
agency. Moreover, the process varies from agency
to agency and feedback is long in coming if provided
at all.
The Recruitment
One-Stop initiative will expand the existing
capabilities of the USAJOBS Federal
Employment Information System and serve as
a single application point to streamline the
federal employment application process, improve
service delivery to job applicants, and enhance
the government’s position as a competitor
for top talent. In the next several months,
new features added to USAJOBS will include:
- Improved Job Searching: More intuitive and
flexible job searching that will allow job seekers
to identify jobs that best match their interests
and skills.
- Clean, Understandable Job Announcements:
Newly formatted job announcements that are attractively
displayed, easy to read, concise and communicate
to applicants the benefits and rewards offered
by a career in public service.
- Electronic Resume Submittal: An intelligent
and efficient process to build and store resumes
in a centralized database and apply electronically,
at any time, for job openings listed on the
site.
- Resume Data Mining: Agency hiring managers
will be able to search resumes contained in
the database to meet their hiring needs.
- Application Status Check: Applicants will
get early feedback regarding basic eligibility
screening on items such as citizenship or age,
and will be able to check the status of their
applications on-line.
Recruitment One-Stop’s “single
point of entry to respond to many job openings” functionality
will improve customer satisfaction by simplifying
the application process and reducing application
times. It will also help agencies achieve
the desired quality level of new hires and
enhance agency response times. |
