Dr. Martinez Appointed NIDCR Associate Director for Program Development
Dr. Ricardo Martinez has been appointed Associate Director for Program Development at the NIDCR. In his new role, he will serve as the primary advisor to the NIDCR Director on the formulation of
policies and approaches related to the Institute's scientific programs and activities. A critical function of this position will be the development of a full understanding of the pervasive changes
in the global economy, in Federal support, in sociodemographics, in patterns of human disease, in health care delivery and economics, and in public demand for science and accountability and their implications
for oral health research and research training. Dr. Martinez also will be involved in the Institute's efforts to enhance its partnerships with institutions where most of the conduct and transfer
of oral health sciences occur. Together with professional groups and other Federal agencies, he will lead the Institute's efforts to recruit and retain clinical scientists into research careers to
address the many emerging scientific opportunities. Dr. Martinez also will spearhead NIDCR's work with minority communities to recruit and retain them in research careers--an undertaking that is
essential to meet the Institute's objective of reducing oral health disparities.
