FY2001 Specialized Forensic Science
Training Program: Reassessing to
Meet Law Enforcement Needs

The FBI's Forensic Science Training Unit received a record number
of FY2001 Specialized Forensic Science Training Program requests.
Unit personnel are committed to meeting your training needs,
and we are working to organize and schedule training to fulfill
your requests. We realize that you would like to have training
dates/commitments confirmed. Unfortunately, several factors prevent
us from providing a formal training schedule and class rosters
at this time.
In an effort
to honor our commitment to you, we will continue to offer classes
throughout FY2002 to satisfy the requests we received before
the October 2000 deadline. We will not accept additional training
applications until your FY2001 training needs have been met.
We realize
that you may have had changes within your organization that would
affect the training you requested in October 2000. Therefore,
you will receive a summary of training requests that we have
recorded from your agency. Use this summary to review your submission
and revise it if necessary. You will also receive a student survey
to help us determine class rosters and a host-site application
form, where applicable.
Please
pay attention to the eligible students and prerequisite entries
that have been specified for each course in the catalog. We will
not accept students for training who do not meet these requirements.
Also, some agencies applied for more than the designated allotment
on the basis of agency size.
If you
have erroneously registered for a class that you do not qualify
for, or if you have over-registered, please adjust your request(s)
when you receive the registration summary and survey documents.
In these cases, if we do not receive an adjusted registration,
your application may be invalidated.
As we endeavor
to meet your training requests, we will be working on the following
initiatives throughout the next year to improve our training
program:
- Implementing
an online Learning Management System for automated student registration
and tracking distanced-based and classroom training. In addition,
it will be used to deliver distance learning courses and serve
as a resource center and an online (synchronous and asynchronous)
classroom environment. This will be the software tool used to
establish our virtual academy/university.
- Fostering
and working with regional training partners to make classroom
training more cost-effective and expand course offerings. Training
at these regional centers will follow standardized curriculum
to ensure that students receive the same high-quality training
regardless of location.
- Developing
the series of fundamental distance learning courses using a standard
template. Successful completion of one or more fundamental course(s)
will be a prerequisite for any corresponding classroom training.
We are excited
to move forward in these new directions and appreciate your patience
as we strive to achieve our goals. Again, be assured that we
are committed to helping you accomplish your training needs.
Future training
program updates will be published in Forensic Science Communications.
