Epidemiology and Prevention of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases

A National Immunization Program and
Public Health Training Network Satellite Broadcast & Webcast


February 13, 20, 27, and March 6, 2003
12:00 Noon - 3:30 PM ET
  

This live interactive program will provide the most current information available in the constantly changing field of immunization. Session one will cover principles of vaccination, general recommendations on immunization, and strategies to improve immunization coverage levels, including registries and vaccine coverage assessment. Session two will cover pertussis, pneumococcal disease (childhood), polio and Hib. Session three will cover measles, rubella, varicella and smallpox. Session four will cover hepatitis B, hepatitis A, influenza, and pneumococcal disease (adult).
Goal
To improve immunization practices in the United States.

Objectives
After viewing this program, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the difference between active and passive immunity
  • List two characteristics and recommended use of live attenuated vaccines.
  • List two characteristics and recommended use of inactivated vaccines.
For each vaccine-preventable disease:
  • Describe the disease and the causative agent
  • List the groups at highest risk
  • Identify those for whom routine immunization is recommended
  • State the characteristics, schedule, contraindications, and adverse reactions for the vaccine used to prevent the disease.
Target Audience
Physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, DoD paraprofessionals, pharmacists, and their colleagues who either give immunizations or set policy for their offices, clinics, communicable disease, or infection control programs. Both private and public health care providers, including pediatricians, family practice specialists, residents, and medical and nursing students.

http://www.phppo.cdc.gov/phtnonline to register online for these courses. Site registration began on January 8. Individual registration began on January 23.

You must use the on-line system to register and to receive continuing education credit for these programs. Participants must register and complete an evaluation for each of the 4 sessions. Participants can earn a maximum of 12 hours of continuing education credit.

Videotapes
To order videotapes of these programs, use the Online Order Form at www.cdc.gov/nip/publications. Individual program tapes will be available on April 21, 2002. Accreditation for these tapes will be available until April 30, 2004.

Continuing Education Credit
Continuing education credit will be offered for a variety of professions, based on 3 hours of instruction.
