Image: MICHAEL V. HAYDEN, Lieutenant General, USAF, Director, NSA/Chief, CSSAs the National Security Agency commemorates 50 years of cryptologic excellence, we recognize that our rich heritage actually began decades prior to our establishment in 1952. This web site highlights some of the events and people that have played critical roles in NSA's creation and vision.

The National Security Agency is built upon a foundation of inspiration, determination and dedication, traits that continue to this day. Pioneers such as Elizebeth and William Friedman; CAPT Laurance Safford, USN; and Ann Caracristi set the example for the thousands who would follow. From the Korean War to the War on Terrorism, the National Security Agency has provided the advantage needed by military leaders and government decision-makers.

We celebrate cryptology's role in our distinguished history and remember those who have contributed to it. Because they served our country without thought of sacrifice or recognition, America stands strong. As you view this page, I hope you are inspired to learn about our cryptologic heritage and remember those who "served in silence" before us.
